In 2007 my son turned 8, it was also the last year my son wanted a big party.
I think it still goes down as one of my favorite party themes. Mission Impossible/Spy Party.
I wish I had saved a copy of his invitation. We burned a DVD and inclosed it in an envelope like the one pictured above stamped Confidential.
For the DVD-My husband dressed in a suit and sat close to the webcam on the laptop, with the Mission Impossible theme music playing in the background and the film projector projecting the image you would see from old movies with the countdown from ten. He started with “This is your mission … then continued with the party details. The address of the party was given in latitude and longitude. The DVD ended with the self destruct message and a beep once the countdown ended. A few boys told my son they actually thought their DVD player was going to explode.
I did not take a lot of pictures back then but for activities they had a scavenger hunt, wrote messages in invisible ink and took each others fingerprints, then it was off to the garage for pinatas and jumping out of an airplane! We had about 70 people there ( kids and adults combined) which included classmates, friends and family.
It was hard to find spy themed pinatas so we used a soccer ball and a space shuttle, spray painted them black and added streamers.
My husband and our awesome family friend made a makeshift jump-station/airplane door to simulate the boys jumping out of an airplane. We had the boys use carabiners and backpacks, we took the top off our shop vac to blow air right on the airplane door. It only short circuited the house once 🙂 Safety first Goggles and Helmets. My husband was such a good sport.
For the cakes we made a ball cake from a Wilton pan and covered it in fondant for a bomb. The dynamite sticks were made using the Wilton recipe for chocolate modeling clay. The cake was iced in gray butter cream and I used Pirouette cookies for the handle.
We used sparklers on the bomb cake to carry it to him but then switched to a candle for him to blow out.
He had a great time, but sadly this was the last time he wanted a big party, after that it has been a handful of friends spending the night eating pizza and playing video games. Where does the time go, they grow up so fast!
